The Latest Mayhem Mounts Drop Introduces a Stunningly Wild Fresh Weapon to Your World
The seasonal game drop for the block-building phenomenon has touched down — and it features the initial fresh armament added to the title since the heavy club made its debut. The lance is finally here and it could very well revolutionize your approach to Minecraft, especially if you thrive on pandemonium.
A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem
The Mayhem Mounts drop also incorporates several new features and enhancements focused on animal mounts in the game. That driving concept made the spear the ideal addition for this release, as the creators had long felt it was time for a fresh combat tool.
"From the outset, we understood that we wanted a new weapon that would add some more range, and we wanted it to be mounted combat," stated a senior product manager. "We prototyped a few different ideas, but the spear was the one that both felt great when we ran our trials and also looked good for the intended purpose."
If you're asking yourself whether fighting from a saddle means you can charge at your companions on horseback, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an combat move excellently designed for it.
"[Jousting on horses is a major functions for the spear, and it's a blast," the lead says. "The spear has two attacks: You have the jab attack, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a charge attack where you lower your spear and deal greater injury [with] the more momentum you have. So [it’s] ideal for mounted duels."
Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures
The wild enjoyment doesn't have to stop there, though. If you're advanced sufficiently into the game that you've been to The End, the developers have an even more ridiculous idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] excellent for strapping on the elytra and going out and creating genuine chaos," she hints.
In other words: Aerial lance combat is now a reality, and it deserves to be an Olympic sport immediately.
Another key feature in this fresh content is the underwater mount. This sea-dwelling mob, which is based on the seashells players have gathered for years, can be domesticated and mounted for underwater travel. Not only will it transport you through the water more swiftly than swimming, it'll also preserve your breath meter, so there's no necessity to come up for air for oxygen.
The remaining new features are largely things that want to kill you, as is the nature of Minecraft. Naturally, there's also a undead nautilus appearing in the water, sometimes with a zombie villager on its back. If you manage to take care of the Drowned, though, you can claim the undead mount — or the standard version, for that matter — with a puffer fish.
"We've long considered this challenge for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it felt like the right time to also introduce something for underwater," the lead explains. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a few different ideas for aquatic rides that we wanted to try out, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked compelling, and we have the tie-in to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game."
She also points out that there are actually two different types of zombie Nautilus: regular and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you find underwater."
Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements
Additional features include the sun-proof skeletons, desert-exclusive undead archers that can survive in the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you venture in that environment. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another new mob. These passive, zombified camels have an striking appearance that sees their bones protruding. The same goes for zombie horses, who have a analogous rib-popping design and can sometimes be encountered after dark with a spear-carrying undead rider on their back.
The remaining updates on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some highly requested adjustments to riding horses. Now, you can ford bodies of water while riding a horse. Furthermore, high-tier barding is now obtainable at the crafting table, so you can give your horse the top-tier safeguarding it is worthy of.
A Fittingly Chaotic Finale
All told, the year-end release of the year is a notable addition. The spear alone — and the mayhem it enables — would have constituted a significant enhancement. Combine that with the Nautilus, and more things seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.
The Mounts of Mayhem update is out now for all major editions of Minecraft.
